Vineel Valmiki

I build machine learning systems that turn messy data into decisions people can act on, and I lead the teams that ship them. Right now that means stocking models for an auto parts retailer, partner programs at Starlink, and a lot of basketball tracking data.

About

I am a student at UC Berkeley studying Computer Science and Data Science. I like problems where the data is a mess, the stakeholder is busy, and the answer has to be something they can trust and use that morning.

Outside of client work, I run the consulting side of Software Product @ Cal, tinker with embedded electronics, climb, sprint, play trumpet, and design Lego models.

Experience

June 2026 – PresentTorrance, CA

CarParts.com Machine Learning Engineer and Project Lead · Contract

Leading a three-person engagement that replaces assumption-driven stocking with forecast-backed sourcing across roughly 1.18M live SKUs, reporting to the CTO weekly.

  • Two-stage LightGBM pipeline predicting whether a part will sell and how much: 0.917 ROC-AUC and 0.772 precision@1,000 in rolling validation.
  • Cut aggregate under-forecasting from 21.57% to a 3.77% mean absolute gap.
  • Spark ETL across thousands of tables, including one 600 GB source, into a 48-month quarterly panel of 6,754 categories.
  • Caught a rolling feature leaking future information into training, rebuilt 20+ features, and reconstructed the folds.
July 2025 – PresentBerkeley, CA

Software Product @ Cal VP of Consulting

Source and close paid client engagements worth $15K to $35K each, turn vague asks into scoped statements of work, and manage delivery. I lead a 15-person organization and run workshops that get new members ready for billable work.

February – June 2026Hawthorne, CA (Remote)

SpaceX Technical Product Manager · Contract

Co-led a tiered global reseller partner program for the Starlink Commercial Team, covering 200+ partners across 150+ countries.

  • Built a composite scoring model (revenue 45%, verified services 30%, activation 25%) indexed by region so partners compete on penetration, not raw dollars.
  • Designed an evidence-based verification pipeline with AWS Textract and Grok Vision feeding LLM scoring, with low-confidence cases routed to humans.
  • Presented the architecture and phased rollout to Starlink leadership.
February – May 2026Watsonville, CA (Hybrid)

Granite Construction AI/ML Engineer · Contract

Built bid-pricing models across 3,900+ Caltrans contracts and 5,900+ bidder records: quantile regression for bid ranges, win-probability models, and a plain-English retrieval advisor (FAISS, Flask) so executives could question the model. Demoed live to the Director of Technology.

December 2025 – April 2026Berkeley, CA

Vectorial AI Machine Learning Systems Engineer Intern

Designed evaluation case studies for a synthetic-audience product and raised measured synthetic-to-real alignment from 80% to roughly 90% across 15+ customer segments. Built the scraping and async worker infrastructure behind it (100+ concurrent tasks).

Projects

Basketball Skill Estimation

Independent research · 2026 to present

Estimating player skill from NCAA game footage, using data access I negotiated with UNC Chapel Hill faculty. Made training fit on one consumer GPU: 3.5x faster steps, GPU utilization from 49% to 88.5%, and inference served through TensorRT and Triton at roughly 120 videos per second.

Pantry Pilot

Agentic ordering · 2026 to present

A multi-turn food agent built on early developer access to the DoorDash CLI. Safe checkout with immutable cart proposals, persistent preference memory, and meal suggestions informed by health data. Python, FastAPI, Claude API.

WhatsApp Agentic CRM

Dec 2025 – Apr 2026

A multi-tenant CRM over WhatsApp handling 1,000+ conversations and 10,000+ messages a day, with Redis job queues, Docker, PostgreSQL, and strict tenant isolation.

Numa

Sep 2025 – Feb 2026

A LangChain agent that lets non-technical researchers clean and visualize data in plain English. Rebuilt the intent-mapping core three times against failures seen across 200+ real datasets, and pitched it to Sequoia Capital.

Arduino Keyboards and Displays

Ongoing

Electronic musical keyboards in C and C++ that read key input and generate tones in real time, plus small-screen animations.

Presentation Evaluation

Feb 2025

Scores how someone delivers a talk from raw audio using prosodic and frequency features, with separate rubrics for students, teachers, and professionals.
